WHAT TO EXPECT
OUR WORKSITE
We will be building at the Lambi site, which is located between the cities of Carrefour and Leogane, not very far west of the capital of Port-au-Prince. The worksite is adjacent to a tent camp where families have been living since the earthquake. Many of the residents work alongside the volunteers and are eager to contribute to progress in this community.
WORK ASSIGNMENTS
The types of work we will be doing during the week include:
• Building the roof trusses from a jig. These are constructed from 2 x 4 lumber, some plywood and fastenings.
• Exterior painting of home.
• Cement work which consists of mixing and pouring the floors for front and back porches. This is a great team building exercise referred to as the Bucket Line.
• Building wood railings for the porches.
• Building window screens.
• Possibly constructing a yard fence for each of the three units.
• Enclosing soffit openings for the unit.
• Construct some ladders and painting platforms from lumber.
• Help with the truss install and roofing (metal).
• Digging foundation footings for future units.
ACCOMMODATIONS
We will be staying at the Residence Filarose, a project of Notre Dame University, in Leogane. The Residence is a distance from the worksite, but offers contact with the community, activities for the volunteers, clean comfortable quarters and good food.
There are a number of segregated rooms, each sleeps between four and six with both single and bunk beds, with mattresses covered in plastic. Linens are provided.
There are no laundry facilities but staff may be able do your laundry for a modest fee.
