ABOUT ONE SMALL HOUSE, INC. (OSH)
One Small House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, incorporated in New York in 2004, that is dedicated to providing adequate shelter for individuals and communities in need. We have been building in Mexico for many years, and we are now expanding our efforts to different areas in the U.S. and Haiti. To date, we have constructed over 50 homes, a community health center, a hospice, a school for disabled children, and a playground. We build for families that are either without homes or are living in conditions that are outright deplorable, unsafe, and unsanitary.
Though we are a small, entirely volunteer-run organization, we have been able to accomplish so much by bringing together determined volunteers and generous donors to help construct these much needed facilities and homes. Throughout all of our projects, we strive to provide our families with the adequate shelter and security that everyone deserves, our volunteers with experiences that they will cherish forever, and our donors with the assurance that their funds are used wisely.
ONE SMALL HOUSE’S EFFORTS IN HAITI
In collaboration with the Grace Fuller Center (www.fullercenter.org/haiti/gracefullercenter), a partnership between the Fuller Center for Housing (http://fullercenter.org/global-builders) and Grace International (http://www.graceintl.org/), One Small House, Inc. began building in Haiti in March 2012. Since then, we have constructed three duplexes that now house six families. These homes were built as part of the Lambi Project, which includes 56 homes, communal bathhouses, latrines and a community center.
We are building on our initial successes in Haiti with at least two more trips planned in 2012. Trips are currently scheduled for August 19-25 and October 28-November 3rd. The families selected to receive these homes, as well as those who have received the six homes we’ve already built, are among those living in the tents that border the Lambi site. Our commitment will hopefully provide a spark that will get families into homes much quicker and hurry the project to completion.
The homes are duplex and constructed out of cement and cement block with metal roofs. Each house has one room and measures 14 x 20 with front and back porch areas, which increase the family’s living area. A site plan of the Lambi site can be found at:
